Known as America’s Hometown Fayetteville understands what it means to make someone feel welcome. During the SEGRA Stadium Fans First Look Mayor Colvin, City Council Members and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers Staff gave every citizen a hometown welcome we will never forget.
Fans gathered at the front of the entrance in what will soon be Hurley Plaza – named after late former Fayetteville Mayor Bill Hurley. As the music played you could hear the rumble of excitement and anticipation for what we would all see once the ribbon was cut.
Vision To Reality
Mayor Mitch Colvin shared the passion and vision behind bringing this stadium from an idea to where it is today. He expressed his gratitude for the drive of each City Council Member and their willingness to push forward through setbacks, difficulties, and doubt to help make this vision a reality. In a short time this idea has grown into the stadium and team we see today.
“It took a little bit of vision, it took a lot of nerve, we burned a lot of political capital but today we will see our returns . . .”Mayor Mitch Colvin

Back in July 2018, I had the chance to tour the stadium when it was no more than dirt and steel beams. We walked around and were told where home plate, the Bird’s Nest would be, the Press Box and even the scoreboard. I remember thinking what an amazing place this could be for Fayetteville. More than just a baseball stadium but a venue for concerts and events as well as a boost to our economy.
As I stood among the crowd of fans eagerly awaiting our moment to see it all for ourselves I felt pride in our city and our community. I felt the love of this hometown welcome and all it means for us and our team – the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
It’s All About You
City Council Member and Chairman of the Baseball Committee Jim Arp took the stage to remind us that building the stadium has also been about building a fan experience.
“Shortly you’re gonna walk into one of the finest stadiums in America. No matter where you go in our ballpark you’re gonna have a view – of the field and the action will be there beginning Thursday night when our Fayetteville Woodpeckers open the season. . .this stadium was designed and constructed to provide you an exceptional fan experience – It’s All About YOU!”Jim Arp Chair of the Baseball Committee
As we took our first steps into the stadium Mr. Arp’s words rang true! The attention to detail and thoughtfulness for the needs of our community are evident at nearly every turn. From the kids’ play area at the back of the field to the rocking porch, picnic tables, party deck, and Veterans Club.
Fayetteville Woodpeckers
Last week I had the opportunity to meet the guys of the team before they hit the road to get the season started. In some cases, these young men have left their countries to pursue their passion for baseball moving from city to city to build their skills. Yet in all the rush of the day, you could almost feel the excitement for the season ahead. It wasn’t something they took lightly and their pride in being part of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers left an impression on me I truly didn’t expect.

As we count down the days to the moment our Fayetteville Woodpeckers take the field of SEGRA Stadium I’m excited for what’s ahead for our hometown!
