Julia Dweck has definitely become one of my favorite children’s authors.  Her stories are always focused on the imaginations and creativity of children while still bringing a lesson to the surface.  Caarina the Cooking Fairy is a great example of this. As soon as my children saw the cover they were in love with the cute little fair and wanted to know what adventure she was going to take them on.

Caarina The Cooking Fairy

I started reading the story out loud when I noticed that my 7 year old daughter was reading as well.  I decided to let her take over and as she read her eyes and her voice began to show her excitement as she started getting excited to find out that threw as going to be a feast and that little Caarina was going to be chosen to prepare the entire meal!

I love how Julia draws your children in with the rhyme and rhythm of her tales and it also makes it very easy for them to read.  As we got further into the story we even had a chance to learn a few new words like knead and vaults.  I was so impressed with how my daughter was able to figure out what they meant by how they fit into the flow of the story!

Not only was my 7 year old able to read Caarina’s tale of outwitting the Gremlin but my 5 and 3 year old were completely taken with the story and how smart little Caarina was to figure out how to beat him at his own tricks and games.

So if you’re looking for a great story as well as a way to help your young readers explore their imaginations and new vocabulary I definitely suggest Caarina the Cooking Fairy as a great start.
