Last week, I was given the rare treat of getting my hair washed and treated. When the hairdresser (who is also a close friend) turned me around she had a big grin on her face. Here’s where the conversation picks up:
I’m like…”What’s wrong?!?”
She says “You know you’ve got some Gray in front, right?”
Oh Yeah I’ve had a few strands of SILVER hair since I was like 17.
Silver?
Yes. Silver.
Silence.
My grandmother told me when you’re still young it’s not GRAY it’s SILVER.
Really?
Yes. Really!
Ok well. You have a nice little cluster of SILVER in the front of your head then.
A cluster? What do you mean a cluster? (I’ve always had a few noticeable strands…what did she mean by cluster?)
As I get up and go to the mirror what do I see? Right smack dab in the middle of my hair where I wear my part a huge group of grey hairs! Exactly as she described it…a CLUSTER…a gathering or something! You would think someone sent out an invitation telling every Silver hair to meet right there in the front of my head!
I turned back to her and she was smiling…”WHAT is so funny?!?!” It’s NOT GRAY it’s SILVER!
Even as I was saying it I started laughing…it honestly did sound a bit ridiculous. Did it really matter at this point? For whatever reason saying I had Grey hair just made it sound so much worse. Perhaps this is why my grandmother came up with the entire “It’s not Gray it’s Silver“ theory as well. I knew she started gaining her salt & pepper look when she was only 28, really early for any woman.
Did she convince herself as well that the change of the one word would make the impact of realizing your hair was betraying you less brutal? What is it about a single strand of hair loosing it’s pigment that makes us believe a strand of our youth is lost right along with it? I mean I’m only 35…I’m not old right? No. I know I’m not. Still it bothers me.
Every time I see that small ‘cluster’ I hear myself whisper “It’s NOT GRAY, It’s SILVER!” that is until I can get my hairdresser friend to put some dye on it…then it will be whatever color I want it to be…
Do you have any age insecurities?
Does your ‘young at heart’ sometimes get interrupted by reality?
If so, how and by what?

This is such a funny yet, overwhelmingly clever post! I laughed at your grandmother's phrase for sure. At the same time, you are right, the idea of getting older is coupled with greying or getting silver wisdom haha! I'm actually embracing my age…I feel people just get older and better because "the more you learn and know…the smarter you grow"…is what the woman says on the PBS show my son watches haha…But seriously! I think society places such desire and lust over youth that it sometimes can make getting older seem so fatal.
Thanks! Yes girl you've been watching too many Kiddies show…don't worry I can sing all the Disney Channel theme songs without even thinking about it…LOL I embrace the knowledge I've gained through my age but I don't think I'm ready to {{hug}} the silver just yet…LOL ๐
It might sound ridiculous, but I say the same thing. This last year I've gotten a lot more silvers, and I think they're really pretty.
Yay! I have a partner in my Silver Not Gray Campaign…LOL ๐ Do you ever plan on coloring or will you just embrace the Silver shine?
I am dreading the day that I get a few gray aka silver strands of silver in my hair. Once I find it, I planned on dying my hair again. ๐
Sounds like a plan..! I am already picking out my appropriate fall colors ๐
Love it! I finally gave up the battle of plucking my SILVER hairs out and started highlighting. Now she has to highlight AND touch up spots with my natural color. So sad, but I'd rather color than have to look in the mirror and LOOK older than I FEEL! ๐
Yes! I think it is less about vanity and just having your look match how you feel on the inside…
OK- I have had "silver" hairs since I was in middle school. I vividly remember my friends pulling the strands out at the bus stop. NOW I'm 31 and my roots are all GRAY..I mean silver. I was beat from the start since my Dad was completely salt and pepper in college. My middle schoolers remind me when its times to get my hair dyed and people tell me all the time that they think it's "cool" and I should let it grow out. They obviously have never thought that one through…
Aaahhh a fellow salt and pepper shaker! ๐ I used to think it was kinda cool when I only had a few strands in high school. Now that this 'cluster' has made it's debut I'm not so sure… Lol
Ha ha ha! It's totally silver. Which matches with accessories. It's bling for your hair!
I LOVE that! I'm gonna definitely run with that.. ๐
I've got plenty of silver, grey whatever it's called. My daughter is constantly pulling them out and I keep telling her I've got to keep the hair I've got left. Leave it alone! I do need to go get it colored. I've been putting it off for a while. ๐
I haven't colored my 'cluster' yet…I just do a brush/sweep over type thing…LMBO ๐
haha. this was great! i found two "silvers" this weekend and they were that color, what is called… oh yeah. pulled out. no more silvers or grays.
NOOoooooo! you're not supposed to pull them out…Old Wives Tale #5807-852 for every 1 you pull out 2 shall return! LMBO :O
LOL I have more than a cluster of SILVER hair on my head, my son thinks I'm turning into Jean Grey ๐
Hahaha! Too Funny! I wanna be Rogue from X-Men…maybe I'll get some super powers to go with my cluster! ๐
