The October Daily: Disconnected

Today’s Challenge: Go without something (e.g. phone, twitter) for a day and tell us what it feels like.

Ok, I forgot to look ahead so I only saw what today’s challenge was at around 10:00 am.  So, I disconnected from Twitter from that time until the same time tonight…

It. Was. Torture.

I felt like I was missing something important.  All day I kept wondering who was posting what and if there were any Twittertunities (yup I just made that up…twitter + opportunities) I could be missing out on while I was ‘disconnected’.  I could wait for 10pm to get here fast enough.  I was swiping that Twitter app at 10 on the nose and Guess What?!?!?!?  I didn’t really miss all that much.

So why did I feel like I was skipping meals instead of simply disconnecting from ONE of my many Social Media Networks?  I think it may be because at this point with my Blog and all that has become attached to my Twitter it has become almost second nature whenever I have a spare moment to check it.  If I’m waiting at an appointment, during commercials, waiting for the microwave or simply bored I do what I call my SM Swoop…I make a swoop through all my Social Media Apps on my phone to update on what happened or to just do a bit of updating on my own accounts.

Staying disconnected today was a bit difficult but it did help teach me that perhaps I need to disconnect a bit more often.  I was a bit more present in my day and that was a plus.

Has anyone else noticed that technology

has become a part of your daily routine?

How would you be if you had to eliminate it for a day?

Twittertunities! I like the sound of that! 🙂 Technology has become a huge part of my daily routine and sometime I find it hard to stay away, especially from my laptop where all the internet action happens. It's easy to stay away from my phone but not from my laptop.

I’m the opposite. My phone is so handy and everything is accessible through Apps. It’s like part of my hand…lol

I think I would been having a tough time!! I know I am too addicted to social media, but it is so hard to leave it alone. I think especially since I got an iPhone, it has gotten so much tougher because everything is SOOOOO accessible. Good for you for taking a break!!

I am totally addicted to my phone! I have everything on it..Twitter FB, Google+, etc. email….if I don't have it I feel lost. I do believe that is the saddest statement I have ever made and I am currently hanging my head in shame! Glad you made it, I'm proud of you!

I can't stand twitter…it still gives me a headache and makes my head spin. Hahaha!! I can totally relate to internet and social media withdrawal but have found on days that I have lost my phone or left it at home by accident that I have enjoyed my day and time with family and friends that much more. We are actually about to implement an unplugged day in our house where we don't touch technology!! I can't wait!

Really? I love it! It’s such a great way to remain connected and stay present especially in the blogosphere.

Good for you! I think my Teen and Hubby would be very upset with me. My kiddies aren’t there yet so they would be ok. 🙂

OMG, I'm so bad. I do the "SM Sweep" while making dinner, between errands, commercial breaks, during shows. It's just bad. Good for you for giving it up for twelve hours!

I’ve forgotten my phone at work before and it was torture. If I had a quarter for every time I went to reach for it and it wasn’t there…Good for you for doing it voluntarily!!

When I forget my phone at home I usually have to make a quick turn around to get it. I’m always like ‘what if’. It’s not like they have pay phones anymore, right? Lol

    I'm addicted to Twitter. I get all excited when my phone dings because I have an interaction. It's like crack {That is if I knew what crack was like, which I don't – but I can imagine.}
Ok, let's get off the drugs.
It's been a really long day.

Anyways … you did it! You still went without and that in itself is an accomplishment. Now get back on Twitter and say hi to me! LOL

I think it's totally col to disconnect from things for a bit. It's so easy, especially for us bloggers to get attached to our social. Things is that whether you do it intentionally or unintentionally, you usually come back refreshed and motivated. Plus, it allows you to not get bored and you can brainstorm in the time off.
