When Things Go Wonky!

,

Last week, I had a few panic moments, stressful nights and basically a full blown Blogger Nightmare! When things go wonky with your site,it is not only scary but dreaded. It’s the things you try to avoid at all costs with PlugIns, back ups and prevention. Β Still there are moments when that one click can simply do more harm than good. Β Problem is for me there was no click, no indication anything was wrong. Β There was simply a phone call.

When Things Go Wonky Scream

The Call

I received a phone call from my Host. Β We had a problem. Β My site’s CPU was doing a bit too much work and they wanted to work with me to track down why and hopefully fix it. Β What did that mean? Β Since when does my Host call ME? Β So yeah, I did a quick hacker check and asked the guy how was I supposed to know he was really from my Host? Β He said that was a good and smart question…Thanks…and told me he would hang up I could go to my site’s website and call the Customer Service then dial his extension. Β After this bit of paranoid confirmation I at least felt better with talking to him.

My site was running extremely slow and it was all because it was a bit large in memory sizes and use for the plan I had with them. Β Great was this a sales pitch? Β No, I actually needed to have it fixed because it was having an impact of my page speed. Β Ok, that I recognized and knew to be important. Β HeΒ worked on it, I listened, I didn’t understand it all but we thought (after over an hour) that most of the issues had been resolved or at least temporarily addressed. Β To have a permanent fix I need to upgrade my service.

Money It Always Comes To Money

Great! Money. Money I didn’t have right now. I have a family trip to Disney – for a family of 8! I have a Teenager graduating from High School which means College Prep and Fees. The last thing I needed was for an added cost. He told me the fixes would keep me running for a couple months at most without any negative impact to my speed starting again. Okay.

So besides praying for a miracle, I called my Hubby. Β I cried, snotted and whined about how I couldn’t handle this.Β I was trying to attend my first Conference this year, how could I represent a site that wasn’t working right?Β Hubby’s reply? Give me a few to think on it and we’ll figure something out. He called me back with a plan and a way to get my site where it needs to be. I love having a man of action.Β Whenever I go into panic mode he goes into fix it mode.

Solutions

We are moving forward and we have a plan. Β I still had a bit of a vent session (see it below…LOL) but I got better and so did my site. Β I went to my best friend, Google, and we also figured out some additional ways to improve my site’s speed, efficiency and performance and I am actually running better than I ever have. Yay! I even got approved for AdSense which requires a certain Page Speed so I know that I have done something right.

Lesson Learned

Learning how to release my panic and realize that even when I feel overwhelmed by a situation my good is still somewhere in the plan. Yes, hearing about what was going on with my site was scary BUT it also lead to my improving my site in ways I would never have done without that knowledge.

I remember when my site completely crashed a couple of years ago. (Oh the horror!) I don't think I bathed for three days. (So serious.) The husband let me grieve for a bit, but then he made me sit down and figure out a plan. Thank God for husbands! So glad you guys figured out your situation. πŸ™‚

Horror is right! I can totally relate and I was only down for a few hours…I couldn\’t even think straight! I don\’t think anyone but a Blogger could truly understand that feeling…something you\’ve worked on, dreamed on and created seemingly lost. I\’m so glad it worked out and that your husband was there for you. Love you site by the way! You have a new follower in me πŸ˜€

Having a vent session has been my go to (besides prayer) since High School. I usually vent on paper. Just write out everything that is bugging me, no form or reason just the words and feelings. It help s πŸ™‚

Wow, at least your site is working faster now. I always worry about my site speed. I hope that it’s not too slow. I need to check the speed and find out if there is anything I can do to make it faster.

    1. MrsTee Avatar

Yes, I am so happy for that. Do you have WordPress or Blogger? I can send you a few of the PlugIns I added to help optimize and such if you like, I have WordPress.

I handle stress by crying, screaming and using choice words and then I call my husband and he seems to almost always solve my problem or tell me it will be okay.

    1. MrsTee Avatar

Yup, sounds like me πŸ˜€ Thank goodness for clear headed husbands.

I think your husband is a wise man — I'm trying to follow his example and first, take some time to think!! Sometimes it helps me to wait 24 hours before taking an action as well… let myself calm down.

    1. MrsTee Avatar

Yes, he is great and calming me down in the midst of a ‘freak out’…LOL I’m glad we took a bit of time to figure stuff out and find a resolution.

Thanks Melissa! Lists are an awesome way to see the problem and help you see possible solutions… but yes the stress usually comes first..LOL

Girl, my host company called me today with a similiar scenario. I do think its a cold-calling sales pitch, but he did offer up some useful tips. I was able to make some small changes and he followed up with and email. I don't have the money to upgrade now, nor do I plan to. Fortunately back when I had money, I locked in 3 years of hosting. My site had been running a little slow too, and ow with the changes its running better. I was stressed for a split second when he told me my site had more requests on it than he'd ever seen. Yikes!

I love the picture by the way, that's how I felt for a sec too! πŸ™‚
