What’s in a name? I think all of us have named something before right? A doll, a pet oh and you know – tiny humans! So what actually goes into picking a name? As Bloggers, we sometimes get stuck at this crucial first step when it comes to getting started with a blog. Like anything, the name is often a person’s very first impression of what something has to offer. Yet naming your Blog doesn’t have to be hard if you know the right steps to follow.
In nearly every consultation I’ve had with a client starting a Blog the main thing they get stuck on is picking a name! I understand it. I do. I have been there and my first pick for my name wasn’t what I would call a good one. If you’ve been around my part of the internet long you will remember I wasn’t always TheMrsTee. My Blog actually started out as MrsTeeLoveLifeLaughter – dot com. Yup! That’s a mouthful right?
Thing is when I started I didn’t realize how important the name of my blog really was. Once I started networking and focusing on the Branding of who I was as a Blogger realized a name change was not only wanted but needed. Yet getting to that name wasn’t easy – at first.
Since the reason I became a Blog Consultant is to help others skip the mistakes I made when I started and share a few of the tips I’ve learned along the way I’m gonna share these 5 easy steps to help you in naming your blog. Whether you’re going through a rebrand like I did or starting from scratch. These 5 quick steps will help you get to a name that’s right for your Blog and your Brand.
Who, What, Where, Why and How?
I know what you’re thinking. These are rules for writing, right? Yes. They are but they are also a great way to help you get focused on finding the perfect name for your blog!
WHO do you want to write for?
The first thing to think about when you are trying to name your blog is who will you be sharing with. Your target audience. This can have a big impact on how you name your site. For example: if I am writing to stay at home moms with multiple children I know I can incorporate terms that would be familiar to them. Like Mom Bun, Mom Hair or even But First Coffee. If my target audience were professionals who work outside the home with no children having phrases like that within my title would most likely not draw them in at all.
Knowing who your audience is going to be will help you focus in on words that will not only capture their attention but give them an idea of what you will be sharing as well.
WHAT will you write about?
This ties in very closely to who your audience is since your content should be of interest to those you expect to visit your site. Selecting a name should include words that give you room to write, share and reflect on things that interest you without boxing you in to any one topic – unless you are creating a very niche specific site.
If you blog is going to be all about your life as a mom on-the-go you don’t want your name to be too focused on any one aspect of that life. Keeping it a bit more open will leave you the option to write about your days in the pick up lines, your craft skills for school projects and the travel you love as a family. Yet selecting words that highlight only one of these things will leave readers and potential visitors confused if they see that plus the kitchen sink (sorta speak).
WHERE are you?
I know. This was honestly not something I considered when I was naming my blog. Thankfully I chose a broad enough name that it hasn’t had a negative impact. Yet taking into consideration where you live and where your audience is can give you and edge when it comes to Google ranking as well as future partnerships.
I’ve come across a few hyperlocal Bloggers who use their blog’s name as their first point of contact when it comes to letting people know where there are and what they write about. some include the name of their city or state within the blog’s name. Others choose to add a locally known term or phrase.
These choices help them not only appeal to local readers but local businesses and brands as well. When someone searches for CITY NAME Bloggers they are more likely to be a top listed portion of those results.
WHY are your here?
Why is what I think is the biggest influence on naming your blog. My why for creating my blog was to share glimpses of who I am as a woman, wife, mother and friend. Answering the why in my search for a blog name is how I decided to remove the Love, Life and Laughter and keep things simple.
My blog was going to be about me – every part that makes me who I am. So what better name than my own? Even in selecting my name I still had options. Instead of choosing my full ‘government name’ I decided to keep the portion of my original Blog name that was mostly me – TheMrsTee.
Getting to your why could honestly be a full post on it’s own. Many of us start this Blog journey simply because we want a pace of our own to express ourselves. There are many times where the true why of what we’re doing comes to us somewhere along the way. I get that – trust me. Yet focusing in on your why at the start of things can help you avoid a re-naming later on down the line.
HOW will you grow?
If you’re a parent (to humans or pets) you know that most times when you pick a name you pick it not only in thought of who the child (or pet) is in that moment but who you see they becoming. I feel the same applies to naming your blog.
The first time I named my blog I was thinking only in that very moment of excitement. I wanted to say everything my blog was going to be in that one name – MrsTeeLoveLifeLaughter. I never stopped to think of how I wanted my blog to grow beyond that moment as not only a blog but a brand. I forgot to consider the length of my name, it’s draw and even it appeal to potential brands I would want to partner with in the future.
In hindsight, I understand that there’s no need to tell everything about your blog in the name alone. There are other ways to do that. Through your tagline (a short one sentence blurb that gives readers an idea of what your site is about).
My tagline: Lifestyle Blogger & Media Influencer | Share My Moments
This one line shares who I am, what I do and what I share. I didn’t have to squeeze it all into my name because I want potential readers to come see for themselves what it is my blog is all about. My blog name – TheMrsTee – leave me all the room for growth I could ever need. To become a leading Lifestyle Blogger, respected Media Influencer and MORE! *I’m all about the more ya’ll!
For me that’s how I know I picked the perfect name. Following these 5 easy steps is what helped me get there and I know it can help you (or a friend – feel free to share 🙂 ) get there too!

These are really great tips! I wanted to make sure mine was short and easy to remember…
Thanks Eva! That was part of the main push behind my own rebranding. You don’t want your name to be difficult to remember or share.
